Description
JOnAS is the Open Source implementation by ObjectWeb of the J2EETM specification. JOnAS is a pure JavaTM implementation of this specification that relies on the JDK. JOnAS is part of the ObjectWeb Open Source initiative, which was launched in collaboration with several partners including Bull, the France Telecom R&D division and INRIA.
JOnAS provides:
- EJB™, Web and Client containers for
J2EE™ applications;
- Web Services;
- Clustering (at RMI and HTTP levels);
- Scalability;
- Interoperability;
- Distributed transactions;
- Security support;
- JMX™ based management;
- JMS™ integration;
- J2EECA™ (Connector Architecture);
- Built-in and user services, for easier server
configuration and customization.
JOnAS has been used to develop large-scale enterprise applications like: e-commerce, eportal, management systems, intranet application, document processing, inventory systems, reservation systems, banking applications, etc.
JOnAS is architectured in term of services. The main components of JOnAS are the following services:
- EJB container provided by a set of Java
classes and a tool to generate interposition
classes; JOnAS relies on the JORM and
MEDOR ObjectWeb projects for
implementing CMP2.0;
- A Java Transaction Manager (JOTM)
providing transaction support and
distributed transaction coordination;
- A JDBC service providing database
connections management (a J2EECA™
JDBC Connector is also provided);
- A Messaging Service: JOnAS is integrated
with JORAM which is the Open Source
implementation of JMS™ (Java
Messaging Service) from Objectweb.
JOnAS may also embed other JMS
implementations;
- A Security Service, with JAAS™,
JACC™, certificates, and LDAP support;
- A Management Service (JMX based)
accessible from a servlet-based GUI;
A Connector Resource Service for
deploying J2EECA™-compliant Resource
Adapters (incl. JDBC and JORAM ones);
- A Web Container Service for running a
Servlet/JSP engine (currently Tomcat or
Jetty) as a JOnAS service in the same
JVM;
- An EAR Service, for deploying J2EE
applications packaged as EAR files;
- A Mail Service, providing application
components with the necessary resources
to send e-mails;
- A Communication Service, relying on the
CAROL ObjectWeb project, providing
support for several RMI protocols as
JRMP, IIOP, Jeremie or CMI (for cluster);
- A Service providing Web Services support,
based on AXIS;
- A set of tools to develop, deploy and
manage applications (plugins for
Eclipse/JBuilder, Xdoclet, …).
